There's three dimensions to this. Security for AI, AI for security, security from AI. I knew what HPE Discovered is my first one. I absolutely loved it. And I think it's interesting to see the execution on those three fronts.

David Nicholson: 

Hello, and welcome to Six Five On The Road, live from HPE Discover 2026. I'm Dave Nicholson, and I am joined by the Brain Trust. I have three distinguished analysts with me. To my left, Mr. Tom Hollingsworth. To my immediate right, Mr. Alistair Cooke, and the distinguished Fernando Montenegro. Welcome, gentlemen. Let's dive right into this. This is sort of the overall examination and recap of what we've seen so far. here at HPE Discover. Tom, I want to start with you. You sort of divide these things up into strategy versus execution. On the strategy front, the topic is networking. Talk to me. What have we seen so far? What are your advice?

Tom Hollingsworth: 

Well, we've seen a lot of the call it the assembly of the HPE networking brand, right? Because up until now, we really felt like there were two separate ships in the night, if you will, Aruba and Juniper. And it feels a lot like they're coming together because the network has evolved quite a bit, where on the one hand, you've got user-facing networks that are becoming more AI compatible. Their self-driving is a big theme here. In fact, they're trying to make the campus network disappear, because ultimately, the users don't care. As long as the network works and is not visible, everything works just fine. And then on the flip side, you have the data center network, where a lot of the AI investment is going into. We're trying to create a utility. We're trying to create a foundational layer, which both Antonio and Rami have said this week, about making sure that everything that goes on in that network is running at the speed of what AI requires. And when you think about the amount of data that's being pumped across these GPUs and just the crazy amount of money that you can lose by a simple tail latency problem, a lot of people are starting to think, you know, is it time for me to make that big jump, that next investment? If you are someone who is, you know, running a 400 gigabit ethernet network and wondering, well, this feels pretty state of the art. There is a 1.6 terabit per second water-cooled switch here on the show floor that is a little classier than something you might remember.

David Nicholson: 

So you're going beyond the stage presentation on this subject. You're talking to people in the hallways all over the place. What's the sense that you get for how well the integration is going? Look, a year ago, we could have looked forward and thought, oh boy, Juniper, Aruba. It's going to be butting of heads and clash of cultures. What's your sense? How's the integration going?

Tom Hollingsworth: 

The sense that I have, but not just me, but other people, is that the integration has gone very well. And I think part of that comes down to some of the little things that I hear Antonio say, you know, on the show floor, on the keynote stage, even in our analyst session. He constantly talks about HP networking and the next words out of his mouth were, so Rami does this, so Rami does that. Antonio Neri is a smart man because he realized something very important. There's nobody better at networking than Rami Rahim. He led Juniper for so long and he hit a lot of those big foundational shifts in networking. Why would you hobble someone like that by saying, I know better than you because I'm the one who bought your company? He's going to let Rami do what Rami needs to do. And to be fair, Rami does have a big job ahead of it, integrating Aruba, integrating Silver Peak, integrating Juniper and all of those product lines. But they're doing it because now we're a year past all of that. There's not really a conversation going on right now about, well, it feels like Juniper this or it feels like Aruba that. It is HPE networking. Whether you're talking about access points in the campus, whether you're talking about 1.6 terabit switches in the data center, it's HPE networking. And I think, honestly, the credit for that goes to the fact that they let Rami drive that ship and they just reap the benefits across all their other product lines.

Alastair Cooke: 

I'll add a context from a hallway conversation I met up just walking between the elevator and the show floor. I was chatting with a lady who manages a managed service provider who were a Juna partner. And this is her first HPE Discover. And one of the questions I had for her is how clear has it been to her as a partner, the integration and the path forward to being an HPE partner? And she said it was very clear to her. She was getting the training plan together, the certification plan together. And she was excited to be able to sell Aruba as well to her customers, to meet a different kind of customer than she was actually being able to sell to with the Juniper.

David Nicholson: 

That's the kind of person who would tell you if it's a train wreck.

Alastair Cooke: 

Oh, absolutely. She had nothing to lose by telling me the truth as it was appearing. So I love that hallway conversation.

David Nicholson: 

Yeah. Good stuff. Yeah. Thanks, Tom. Fernando, let's switch up gears. AI, AI and security. And I want to ask you, looking at it through the lens of more the execution side of things, do you think that HPE is demonstrating that they are moving beyond the talking about it phase into the doing it phase? Yes, give me your thoughts.

Fernando Montenegro: 

Yes, absolutely. So, when we talk about AI and security, there's a couple of things we need to think about first. We like to talk about there's three dimensions to this. People will usually talk about security for AI. How is my organization deploying security capabilities to protect whatever AI we're doing? That's one. AI for security? What are the benefits that I can get in my security architecture by using AI? And then the third one we like to talk about is security from AI. What changes in my threat posture, right, if my adversaries are using AI, right? So, along those three lines, it was interesting to see, this is, I got, I'm new at HPE Discover, this is my first one, I absolutely loved it. And I think it's interesting to see the execution on those three fronts. So on the security for AI, well, there's an effort around the AI firewall on the SRX side. There is the clear notion that as they bring SASE, secure access service edge, together, that is a very interesting place for analyzing AI traffic flows. But outside of that, it's also interesting to see how HPE is deploying capabilities for security for AI in terms of Zerto, for example, is looking to do recovery from agentic misbehavior. In some cases, that's really well thought out. And then on the other side is the support for, okay, OpenShell and Nemo Claw, like, that kind of agentic understanding. So, that's all the security for AI side. And then on the AI for security, it's the self-driving conversation that we heard on networking. We're hearing similar things around security, right? It's, okay, how are we taking threat insights from HP threat research into your security? So, high points on- So you're seeing it. You're seeing it happen. Yes. And to Tom's point, right? The Juniper networking portfolio, particularly the SRX, has always been a phenomenally capable platform for some of this. So it's interesting to see them growing on this. We've had conversations with executives on, okay, where they're taking the, for example, the container version of the SRX, right? Where can we deploy that for more AI visibility? So really interesting. Yeah, yeah.

David Nicholson: 

Good stuff, Fernando. Absolutely. Alistair, let's talk hybrid cloud, hybrid cloud operations from an execution standpoint. What do you, what do you, what do you, what are you feeling? I mean, look, we're all, we're all cynical and skeptical about this stuff. I mean, you think, you think they're going beyond talking a good game?

Alastair Cooke: 

Yeah, I think I'm seeing more consistency in how they're looking at building out a hybrid cloud environment, making it easy to build out, and more importantly, to operate over time a hybrid cloud environment. We see things like consistent product naming across some of the platform. That was things that came out in this morning's keynote, and it has been a source of confusion for customers. Which of these of your product descriptions should I have for my scale? Well, now it's easier because there's sizing information. Yeah, but way beyond that. The acquisitions of OpsRamp and the integration of OpsRamp to manage in a more intelligent, we dare say, agentic way, because that's the fashionable way. We did it here self-driving, so they haven't progressed quite far enough on managing the hybrid car environment to call it self-driving. But The combination of Morpheus, OpsRAM, Zerto is the other one that gets thrown in there in that collection. It looks really good, really happy that there's also support for non-HPE hardware. And this is a really significant element of people migrating from existing platforms and wanting to get into this huge range of things that HPE does. You don't have to rip and replace everything in one go. But they've been really smart as well. They're giving you an opportunity to reduce the cost if you are in the process of replacing a hypervisor that, well, you paid a renewal because you didn't have time to get rid of it, but you're worried about the next renewal. Well, HP has got your back of licensing the software at least for the replacement for the first year for free and giving the services their own migration. So there's some pretty smart moves around keeping your compute on-premises where you need it. getting compute to where the data is being generated and consumed. And of course, AI underlies the whole thing. Private cloud AI on-premises gets a big scale up and getting some really interesting capabilities that play into the security area. So the registry for agents and the ability to then deal with them as a security entity of their own. These are really good signs of progress towards getting real hybrid environments. Although, as I'll probably drill into it another time, it's not just hybrid, it's multi-cloud as well. You're not just sitting across one cloud.

David Nicholson:
